Protein & Oats as a Meal Replacement

Meal-replacement diets claim to help you shed excess pounds by reducing your daily caloric intake. While some meal-replacement diets can help you lose weight, not all are created equally. If you are trying to get rid of excess pounds, reducing how many calories you consume and increasing how many calories you burn is an effective way to reach your goals. Replacing one or two meals a day with oats and protein is one way to reduce your total calorie consumption, but you should have all the information before using it as your weight-loss plan.

With a meal-replacement diet, you replace one or two of your regular meals with products that are lower in calories. In most cases, you would replace breakfast, lunch or both, and then eat a healthy and well-balanced evening meal. Most meal-replacement products come in the form of shakes, bars, drinks and cookies. The average meal-replacement diet plan restricts your intake of calories to between 800 and 1,000 per day. You can design your own meal-replacement plan using low-calorie and nutritious foods in place of your regular meals, but always speak with your doctor before starting this type of diet plan to be sure it is safe for you.

Oats are high in fiber and low in fat and calories. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, fiber is the part of a carbohydrate that cannot be digested. Fiber can improve your health by reducing your risk for type 2 diabetes, heart disease and constipation. According to a 2009 study published in the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition," an increased intake of cereal fiber could aid in weight loss. Replacing one or two meals with a bowl of high-fiber oatmeal can help increase your intake of fiber while also potentially reducing your caloric intake.

Protein is present in animal foods -- like meat, milk and cheese -- as well as certain legumes, such as beans and nuts. Protein could be beneficial in helping you lose weight because it moves through your digestive system more slowly, which can help you feel full for longer periods of time. A 2009 study published in the "New England Journal of Medicine" found that increasing protein intake does help with initial weight loss, though regaining weight is common after a year. Replacing one or two meals with certain protein foods might help you reduce your caloric and fat intake. Beans and lentils are lower in fat and calories than beef or pork. Add protein to your oats to maximize your potential weight loss and to replace your regular meals. Stir peanut or almond butter into your oatmeal or sprinkle it with chopped nuts to increase the protein content.

Ask your doctor if a protein-and-oat meal-replacement plan is safe for you before beginning to replace any meals. Many meal-replacement diets limit your intake of certain foods by restricting you to a specific number of calories. This can result in nutrient deficiencies. A 2010 study published in the "Nutrition Journal" notes that some meal-replacement plans are nutrient-dense and effective ways to lose weight. However, when you create your own meal-replacement plan, you might miss out on key nutrients. If you eat only oats and protein for one or two meals, you are likely not consuming adequate amounts of fruits, vegetables and low-fat dairy foods, leaving you deficient in vitamin C, potassium and calcium.

The Impact of Protein and Carbohydrates in Exercise

To be at your best during exercise it is crucial that you eat appropriately. Protein and carbohydrates are two of the main types of nutrients found in foods. Eating foods that contain these two substances may have a more beneficial effect on your performance during exercise than consuming only one or the other.

Carbs provide your body with energy that you need to get through workouts. Foods that are rich sources of carbs include breads, pasta and cereals. Your body utilizes protein to build and maintain muscle. Meats, dairy, soy, nuts and beans are high in protein. The combination of the protein and carbs before, during and after working out provides you with several benefits. According to the National Strength and Conditioning Association, carbs and protein speed recovery, promote muscle growth and improve sports performance.

Research supports the idea that carbs and protein improve sports performance. A study published in the "International Journal of Sport Nutrition and Exercise Metabolism" in September 2003 found that eating carbs and proteins gave participants more performance gains than carbs alone. The researchers stated that the reason for the enhanced performance was not evident. A meta-analysis published in August 2010 in the "Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research" also showed that protein and carbs improved performance during high-intensity exercise, but speculated that the increased caloric intake was most likely the cause.

The importance of protein could be overstated. According to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, carbs have the most significant impact on sports performance; however, protein is not the next more important, fluids are. An adequate fluid intake to prevent dehydration is the second most important factor for success in sports. When you exercise, your body loses fluid; eventually you may lose more water than you can absorb and become dehydrated. The Mayo Clinic recommends drinking one to three cups of water before exercise and to keep drinking water during and after exercise.

The general recommendation for diet is to eat a minimum of 50 percent of daily calories in the form of carbs, 35 percent or less from fat and the rest from protein, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations. However, athletes and people who exercise frequently may need a higher amount of carbs in their diet. Consume 60 percent of your daily calories from carbs, 30 percent of fewer calories from fat and between 10 percent and 15 percent from proteins if you are active, states the FAO.

Joint Pain Caused by Alpha S1 Casein Protein

Alpha S1 casein protein is one of the four casein proteins found in dairy products. When people report an allergy or intolerance to milk, they are experiencing a reaction to a specific milk protein. Although symptoms of milk allergy often involve gastrointestinal upset, an allergic reaction can also induce inflammation and cause joint pain.

The milk from cows, goats and sheep contain alpha S1 casein protein. The amount of this protein depends on the breed and the stage of lactation. A study published in 2010 in “Biomedical Informatics” analyzed casein proteins in the different types of milk. Researchers found that the alpha S1 casein was a major allergen in cow’s milk. Although both goat's and sheep's milk contain this protein, goat's milk appears to be hypoallergenic. Researchers point to previous studies that found milk allergy symptoms improve with goat’s milk.

Various conditions can cause joint pain, including arthritis, infectious diseases, bursitis and muscle pain. Food allergies can also cause inflammation and joint pain, according to the Center for Food Allergies. Consuming alpha SI casein may trigger joint pain or arthritic symptoms if you are allergic to the protein. These reactions can occur hours or even a day after consuming the casein protein, which can make it difficult to diagnose a milk allergy as the cause.

Although an allergy or intolerance to alpha S1 casein protein can cause joint pain, other symptoms are more common. The Mayo Clinic reports that immediately after consuming milk, a person with a milk allergy may notice hives, wheezing and vomiting. Other symptoms take longer to appear and include diarrhea, loose stools, abdominal cramps, cough, runny nose, watery eyes, skin rash or colic. A milk allergy can also cause anaphylaxis, or a life-threatening reaction that constricts the airway.

Consult your physician if you notice joint pain after consuming milk. Your doctor can test to see if you are allergic to alpha S1 casein protein. He can also rule out other possible causes of joint pain. If you are allergic, you can change your diet to avoid the proteins. You can also try an elimination diet to see if your joint pain improves when you do not consume the alpha S1 casein proteins.
